What is Vellum?
Vellum is a translucent paper that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is perfect for adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to any wedding stationery. It is also versatile and can be used to create various effects, from subtle overlays to eye-catching wraps.
It is a type of paper made from calfskin or sheepskin. It is known for its translucency and smooth surface. It is also a strong and durable material, making it ideal for wedding stationery.

How to Use Vellum in Wedding Stationery
Vellum paper can be used in various ways to create stunning wedding stationery. Here are a few ideas:
Vellum Wraps
- These wraps are a popular way to add a touch of luxury to wedding stationery. They can be used to wrap around the invitation card or other stationery items, such as save-the-dates, wedding invitations or thank you cards. They are a subtle and effective way to add a special touch to your stationery.

Vellum Overlays & Inserts
- Vellum overlays and inserts can add a subtle and elegant touch to wedding invitations and save the dates. They can be used to overlay a design, a photograph, or message on the invitation card. These overlays and inserts can also be used to create a layered effect.

Vellum Belly Bands
- These belly bands are a great way to keep wedding invitations together. They can be used to wrap around the invitation card and other stationery items. These belly bands can also be printed with a design or message.

Vellum Envelopes
- Vellum envelopes are an option to use, and some people really do love these. They are translucent, allowing the recipient to see the invitation card inside. I am not the biggest fan of these envelopes I have to say, as you can see the folds and joins in them and my personal view is that this doesn’t look as elegant as the other options. However, if a couple really has their heart set on these, then I would be more than happy to source these.
Tips for Using Vellum
Here are a few tips for using this paper stock in wedding stationery:
- Use a sharp blade when cutting. This will help to prevent the material from tearing.
- Use a bone folder to score it. This will help to create crisp folds.
- Use a permanent adhesive to adhere vellum. This will help to prevent the material from peeling.
- Print on vellum using a laser printer. This will help to prevent the ink from smudging.
- Store in a cool, dry place. This will help to prevent the material from yellowing.

Final Thoughts
Vellum is a versatile and elegant material that can be used to create stunning wedding stationery. With a little creativity, you can use this paper stock to create unique and memorable wedding invitations.
For couples seeking to infuse their wedding stationery with an air of sophistication and individuality, vellum stands as a compelling choice. Its inherent translucency lends itself beautifully to layering, allowing for the creation of intricate designs and captivating visual effects.
Whether used as an overlay to showcase delicate calligraphy or used to subtly reveal a contrasting colour beneath, vellum elevates the overall aesthetic, imparting a sense of refined elegance that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on your guests.
